A Laddergram Puzzle

This "list" is a puzzle based on word game invented by British author Lewis Carroll on Christmas Day 1877.  To solve the "laddergram," change one letter of the previous word to move down each "rung" until you get to the final word.  We've given you the first two words as examples and the solution can be found at the bottom of the post.

shrimplike sowbugs = SCUDS

potatoes = SPUDS

manly men =

shocks =

v. hinder, arrest =

brain drain =

shall not =

prison weapon =

smelt =

tony's industries =

Holden Beach House Names

Since the late 1980s, my family has vacationed in Holden Beach, North Carolina.  The children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of Luther and Mildred Knauff rent a house for a week and those of us who are able come for as many days and nights as possible.  For many years, the house was "The End Zone," located at 1002 Ocean Blvd. West, a "second row" house.  More recently, the houses have been ocean front houses.  Most of the houses that are rented are named.  Since the drive from the "mainland" to the west end of the island can take 15 minutes or so, one of the ways to pass the time is to look at the signs on the front of houses and pick favorite names.  Here are a few notable names from 35 years of beach-going.

Classic Names:
Donald's Duck Inn
Tale of a Whale
Beach Nuts
Sand Witch

Religious Names:
Be Still
Salt and Light
Sabbatical
Shalom Y'all

Punny Names:

Clamelot
Turtle-ly Awesome
Beaches Be Crazy

Duplex Names:

Ocean Harmony | Ocean Melody
Eden | East of Eden

Holden Beach Names:
Holden Aces
Holden On
Holden Peach
Not Holden Back

Names of Houses We Stayed At:
The End Zone, 1002 Ocean Blvd West (many years, including 1993, 2006)

Blame It On The View (2018)

List of John Bellairs Books I've Read

I was introduced to John Bellairs through an "old friend," Edward Gorey, who provided illustrations for many of his gothic novels.  When the previews for "The House with a Clock in Its Walls" movie came out, I thought I should read the book that inspired it before I saw the film.  I did, and I was introduced to Lewis Barnavelt and Johnny Dixon and Anthony Monday and their friends and foes.  In January of 2021 (with some extra reading time in 2020 due to the pandemic), I completed all of Bellairs' book series, including the novels completed or written by Brad Strickland after Bellairs' death in 1991.

One thing I appreciate in Bellairs' novels is the way faith is incorporated.  Lewis is Roman Catholic and recites prayers he learned as an altar boy.  Roman Catholic priests are characters in the Johnny Dixon series.  It's not a "bash you over the head with a Bible type thing", but a "faith is an important part of many peoples' lives kind of thing."

Other
01 The Gargoyle in the Dump

About the cover of The Specter from the Magician's Museum, Brad Strickland writes, "Edward Gorey’s cover features a mysterious tombstone with a stone sphere, inspired by the Charles Merchant monument in Marion, Ohio. A five-ton globe on the Merchant tomb marker mysteriously revolves on its own, and no one knows why. I put a similar thing in the book. From Gorey’s sphere, enigmatic eyes peer as if gazing into your soul. The back includes one of Gorey’s splendidly spooky haunted houses, and hovering above it the form of a gigantic spider.
